Mental health is a non negotiable for ethical patient care. Good practise guidance promotes that all practitioners complete a mental health assessment as part of a healthy patient selection process, and for the ongoing monitoring of patient wellbeing. If you are using an isolated psychometric ‘tick sheet’ that leaves you confused or saying ‘now what?’ You are not alone… For many reasons, many practitioners ‘struggle’, ‘avoid’ or ‘hide’ when faced with difficult or uncomfortable patient interactions around mental health. With mental health being recommended in the scope for new licensing provisions in England, we have a unique opportunity to acknowledge the mental health ‘blind spots’ in our clinics and prepare for an integrated approach to implement the right access, to the right treatment, for the right patients at the right time. Adopting an informed, evidenced based, patient centric practice, you can embed an effective safe service to ‘hold space’ for a patient’s mental health. This session will identify key mental health touch points in a patient journey to determine ‘how’ and ‘where’ to start the conversation, break down the barriers, dyspell mental health myths and provide useful techniques to build your confidence to implement mental health support at your clinic that will pay dividends in return.
