The British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT) is the professional body for over 3,500 BANT nutrition practitioners. Its primary function is to assist its members in attaining the highest standards of integrity, knowledge, competence, and professional practice, in both clinical and non-clinical settings.
BANT members combine a network approach to complex systems, incorporating the latest science from genetic, epigenetic, diet and nutrition research to inform individualised recommendations. Recommendations are not a replacement for medical advice; practitioners frequently work alongside medical professionals to support individuals’ wellbeing.
Personalised nutrition is tailored specifically to the individual, taking into account their health journey, health goals and dietary preferences. Practitioners consider each individual to be unique and recommend personalised nutrition and lifestyle programmes rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach.
Personalised nutrition consultations are relevant for individuals with chronic conditions, such as metabolic dysregulation, Type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis; anyone with persistent digestive issues or those wishing to support an autoimmune condition, as well as those looking to enhance their health and wellbeing.
BANT practitioner members are required to be registered either with Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) or be statutorily regulated. CNHC holds a register accredited by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (PSA), an independent body accountable to the UK Parliament.
Only Registered Nutritional Therapy Practitioners and Registered Dietitians are trained and qualified in clinical practice to meet national standards and work in a one-to-one setting.
